This project explores the potential future impacts of ICTs on UK energy consumption to assess the potential for ICTs to drive future improvements in energy productivity.

Anticipating future impacts of ICTs on energy consumption

This project investigates the potential future impact of ICTs on energy consumption and examines the potential of these technologies to drive improvements in energy productivity. This involves looking at improvements in the energy efficiency of ICTs, improvements in the energy efficiency of industrial sectors enabled by the use of ICTs, and how virtual ICT-based services could substitute for more energy-intensive services. The project aims to develop scenarios to examine the extent to which these developments can enable continuing economic growth whilst reducing energy consumption, and tests the feasibility of these scenarios through working with stakeholders and economy-wide models.

What we are asking

  • What are the potential future impacts of ICTs on UK energy consumption?
  • What contribution can ICTs make to the decoupling of energy consumption from GDP?
