This project examines the current state of knowledge of the impact of ICTs on energy consumption.

Reviewing the evidence on ICTs and energy consumption

The aim of this project is to rigorously examine the current state of knowledge of the indirect impacts of ICTs on economy-wide energy consumption. To achieve this goal, we are undertaking a systematic review of the relevant evidence. The objective is not so much to compare quantitative estimates of ICTs’ energy impacts as to clarify the drivers, mechanisms and determinants of those impacts, and the conditions under which they are likely to be positive or negative, or larger or smaller.

What we are asking

  • What is the level and quality of evidence for different ICT applications?
  • What is the level and quality of evidence for different impact mechanisms?
  • What are the key determinants of indirect impacts for selected ICT applications?
  • Which ICT applications appear to offer the greatest potential for energy savings?
