This project looks at ‘consumer-centric’ business models which allow users to purchase high-quality energy services.

Use of ICT for new energy services business models

This project investigates the role of innovative business models, enabled by digital technologies, in delivering new forms of value to users and contributing to delivering low carbon and wider energy system goals. These could include the role of peer-to-peer energy trading platforms to enable users to trade locally generated renewable electricity, and innovative tariffs supported by smart homes technology. However, these types of new business model may also require innovation in regulations, and so the project is examining any further regulatory changes that may be needed to facilitate the innovation and scale-up of new business models.

What we are asking

  • What are the key innovations in new digitally-enabled energy services business models?
  • What values and for whom are created through innovations in these business models?
  • How is value created from these business models for 1) users; and 2) for the energy system?
  • What are the key barriers to scaling up the business models which produce greatest value for users and/or the energy system?
